If you haven’t noticed, I’ve decided to keep a journal type thing of what I’ve been doing to get this site up and running. There have been TONS of hacks and tweaks that I’ve had to do and maybe some of them can help you out.
Let’s talk about today. I woke up this morning to check things out and noticed that my previous and next navigation links were not working correctly. You could click on them, from the index.php page, and they weren’t redirecting right. The page that it went to was the exact same as the homepage, but with the archive template. That was really weird. How could the page know it was in section 2, but display the homepage’s posts?!
It was time to investigate. Were the other navigation links broken as well (page.php). NO! They weren’t. Interesting. So there wasn’t a problem with theloop.php and navigation.php was working fine. There was only one more thing I could think of. Yesterday I had edited the template to allow a second side bar on the left hand side (Redoable with 2 Sidebars!!). I had constructed a few menu’s to show up, but other than that I was stumped. A few CSS hacks wasn’t going to mess up the Wordpress navigation functions.
Come to find out, it was one of the "widgets" I was using. For some reason, when I used a recent_post widget, it would reset the current page URI. Don’t ask me why, because I have no idea. Actually, I don’t even know exactly why it was doing it. To solve the problem I deactivated the plugin and just created my own. This also happens to be my first attempt at plugin development. It was really easy and I’m definitely going to do more in the near future.
So I guess that mean’s I need to add a plugins section too huh?! Geez…things just keep piling up. But anyway…what else did I do? Oh yeah, I added a Digg style pagination at the bottom of the index.php page. I think it looks a lot better and it flows a lot better as well. I decided to go with pagenavi. It was extremely easy to implement and it seemed the easiest to re-engineer so previous became next, and next became previous, etc. If you would like to download my version, please feel free!
So today has definitely been trying. But you gotta learn right. You only get good unless you do it…
